Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need a doula?

Regardless of where or how you plan to have birth, hiring a doula is like having a birth expert in your pocket. Research has continually shown that birth outcomes improve when a doula is present at the birth.

When birthing in a hospital, a doula can help you work through your options and be 100% focused on you, as it is unlikely a nurse or other care provider will be present for the duration of labor.  For an out of hospital birth, a doula can be another member of the birth team devoted entirely to you and your support person, while your midwives can focus on keeping you and your baby happy and healthy.

Is a doula going to replace my partner?

No!  A doula does not take the place of the birth partner. A doula’s role is to support the entire family during the birth. This includes keeping the birth partner fed, hydrated, and rested as well.  Your birth partner knows you best and will be your best emotional support.  A doula is an expert in birth and can offer ideas and knowledge your partner may not have.

What is the cost to hire a Babymoon doula?

Our Comprehensive Doula Package, which includes our 5-week Comprehensive Childbirth Education Series, Prenatal and Postpartum group classes, provides support and services in pregnancy, labor and postpartum, as well as basic birth photography, is $1,875.00

Payment plans are available, please contact us to discuss a plan that works for you.

How long do you stay after the birth?

The first few hours after birth are a sacred time for families and your first opportunity to bond. Our doulas are usually present for up to two hours after birth, to help establish breastfeeding, answer questions, and provide additional support. We continue to be available by phone until the postpartum visit.

How are a midwife and a doula different?

Both a midwife and a doula can provide physical and emotional support during labor. However, a midwife has clinical skills and medical training and is primarily responsible for the safety of mom and baby. A midwife will listen to your baby’s heart tones, monitor your vitals, perform cervical checks if necessary, and facilitate the actual birth of the baby.  A doula does not perform any medical procedures and is strictly there for physical and emotional support.
